Checking Bulb Holders: A Technical Guide

Similar to lenses, bulb holders can be removed from either the front or rear of the light unit.

Disconnecting the Wiring

Start by disconnecting any wiring to the bulb holders. This typically involves pulling off the multi-plug connector. If individual wires are attached, make a note of which wires connect to which terminals to facilitate reassembly.

Removing the Bulb Holder

Examine how the bulb holders are fitted to your vehicle. They may be secured with small screws or clips, or they may screw out completely with the bulb still in place. Some small indicator repeater bulb holders are removed along with their wiring and need to be disconnected away from the light unit.

Inspecting for Corrosion

Once the bulb holder is removed, inspect it for any signs of corrosion on the wiring terminals or inside the bulb holder. The bulb is often grounded through the holder’s securing screw, so ensure that this screw is free of corrosion, both on the holder and at the point where it attaches to the vehicle body.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Clean any corrosion using wet-or-dry sandpaper and apply a penetrating oil to prevent further deterioration. If the bulb holder is severely rusted, it is advisable to replace it with a new one.
