BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2024 S 1000 RR US, and 2020-2026 S 1000 RR motorcycles. The vibration of the motorcycle may cause an internal component of the ignition lock to fail, which can cause the instrument display, rear lighting, and other systems such as ABS to fail, or cause an engine stall while riding.
Consequence
An engine stall or failure of electrical systems such as the instrument display or ABS, increases the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The remedy is currently under development. Letters informing owners of the safety risk are expected to be mailed September 14, 2026. Additional letters will be sent once the remedy is available. BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2025 Mini Cooper S, Mini Countryman S All4, X2, 2024 Rolls-Royce Spectre, 2023-2025 i7, 7 Series, X7, 2024-2025 i5, 5 Series, 2023-2024 XM, X1, 2024-2025 X6, and X5 vehicles. The integrated brake (IB) system may malfunction and result in a loss of power brake assist or cause the Antilock Brake (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems to not function properly.
Consequence
A loss of power brake assist can extend the distance required to stop the vehicle. Additionally, malfunctioning ABS and/or DSC systems can cause a loss of vehicle control. Either of these scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
Remedy
The Integrated brake system will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed August 21, 2026. Owners may contact BMW customer service at 1-800-525-7417 or Rolls-Royce customer service at 1-877-877-3735. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall will become searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning August 21, 2026. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 24V739 or 24V104 will need to have the new remedy completed.

Consequence
A loose positive battery cable connection could lead to the vehicle stalling, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, a loose battery cable can overheat, increasing the risk of a fire.
Remedy
A dealer will check the positive battery cable connection and, if necessary, repair it, free of charge. The owner notification letter is expected to be mailed on February 13, 2026. Consequence

BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2026 X6, X7, X5, and X5 Plug-In Hybrid vehicles. The instrument panel may have been manufactured incorrectly and prevent the passenger-side air bag from deploying properly.
Consequence
An air bag that does not deploy properly can increase the risk of injury during a crash.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the instrument panel trim, free of charge. The vehicles have not been sold from dealer inventory and therefore, no owner letters will be mailed. From Aircraft Engines to the Ultimate Driving Machine

BMW (Bayerische Motoren Werke) was founded in Munich in 1916 as an aircraft engine manufacturer, moved into motorcycles in 1923, and entered the car business in 1928 by acquiring a small Eisenach factory building licensed Austin designs. The company nearly collapsed in the 1950s selling a mismatched range of bubble cars and expensive luxury sedans with no middle ground. The 1962 “Neue Klasse” sedans saved BMW and set the formula the brand still runs on: rear-wheel drive, a straight-six or four-cylinder engine over the front axle, and a chassis tuned for driver feedback over outright comfort.

That formula is why BMW markets itself on performance rather than on car anatomy, but it also explains the brand’s reliability profile today. A modern 3 Series or X5 carries a turbocharged engine with variable valve timing, xDrive all-wheel drive, and iDrive infotainment layered onto that performance-first chassis. More performance and more technology mean more components that can fail and higher labor costs to fix them — BMW’s official-dealer labor rates run well above the industry average. That trade-off — sharp handling and strong engines, but a genuinely more expensive ownership experience than a mainstream brand — is the core thing to understand before buying a BMW.

BMW Reliability Compared to Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Lexus

Lexus is the outlier that makes the comparison useful: it costs roughly half what a BMW does to keep on the road, which is the clearest evidence that reliability and driving character are separate engineering choices, not a package deal. Common Problems and Faults by Model

BMW 3 Series: What to Watch For

Most 3 Series reliability complaints trace back to two engine families used from roughly 2012 to 2015: the turbocharged N20 four-cylinder and the older N54/N55 sixes. The most common issues:

  • Timing chain wear (N20, 2012–2015) — the N20 mounts its timing chain at the rear of the engine, next to the gearbox, for packaging reasons. That makes it labor-intensive to reach, so a failing chain, guides, or tensioner is a far more expensive repair than a typical front-mounted chain. BMW issued a recall for early N20 timing chain guides; the later B48 engine moved the chain to the front and fixed this.
  • Valve cover gasket and oil filter housing leaks — the plastic valve cover and its rubber gasket harden with heat cycling and begin seeping oil, which can drip onto the serpentine belt and accelerate its wear if ignored.
  • Electric water pump and thermostat failure — BMW’s plastic-bodied cooling components are a known weak point; independent specialists widely recommend proactive replacement of the water pump around 100,000 km (60,000 mi) regardless of symptoms.
  • Carbon buildup on intake valves — a side effect of direct injection, since fuel never washes over the intake valves the way it does in port-injected engines. Left unaddressed for too long, it can cause rough idle and misfires; periodic walnut-shell media cleaning is the standard fix.

The N54, found in older turbocharged 335i models, adds high-pressure fuel pump and fuel injector failures and wastegate rattle to the list. The B48 four-cylinder that replaced the N20 from around 2015 onward addressed the timing chain and water pump design flaws directly and is considered meaningfully more reliable as a result.

BMW X5: What to Watch For

The X5’s problem list depends heavily on which engine and generation you’re looking at, but three issues repeat across most of them:

  • N63 V8 timing chain and oil consumption (2010–2018, xDrive50i/M50i trims) — the twin-turbo N63 is the X5’s most expensive engine to own. Known issues include timing chain wear producing a cold-start rattle, and valve stem seal failure that causes rising oil consumption and blue exhaust smoke. BMW extended warranty coverage on some N63-related repairs after widespread complaints.
  • Air suspension wear on higher trims — the optional rear or full air suspension gives a smoother ride but the compressor, air struts, and self-leveling sensors are prone to failure as the system ages, especially on E70 (2007–2013) models.
  • Electric water pump and thermostat failure — the same plastic-cooling-component weakness found across BMW’s inline and V8 engines of this era, leading to overheating if not caught early.

The current G05-generation X5 (2018–present) with the B58 inline-six is a clear step up — it largely avoids the N63’s headline issues, with early reports limited to minor transfer case and tailgate-electronics niggles rather than engine-level failures.

Engine Analysis: Which BMW Engine Should You Choose?

B58 3.0L Turbocharged Inline-Six

Across every reliability data source used for this guide, the B58 comes out on top. It’s the engine in the 340i/440i/M340i, 540i, X3 M40i, and current X5 xDrive40i, and it corrects the N54/N55’s known weak points — front-mounted timing chain, a more robust cooling system, and a stronger bottom end. If reliability is the priority and the badge isn’t negotiable, a B58-equipped BMW is the safest choice in the current lineup.

B48 2.0L Turbocharged Four-Cylinder

The B48 replaced the problem-prone N20 from around 2015 onward and fixed its two biggest flaws: the timing chain moved to the front of the engine, and the electric water pump gave way to a more durable belt-driven unit. It’s the volume engine in the 3 Series (330i), X1, and X3 (sDrive30i), and it’s considered meaningfully more reliable than the N20 it replaced — though, like any turbocharged direct-injection engine, it still benefits from periodic intake-valve cleaning.

N63/S63 4.4L Twin-Turbo V8 (Legacy)

Found in older X5, X6, X7, 7 Series, and M-badged models, the N63 family is the one engine on this list worth real caution on. Turbochargers mounted inside the V of the engine make heat management difficult, and the combination of timing chain wear, oil consumption from failing valve stem seals, and auxiliary electric water pump failures (the subject of its own safety recall over a fire risk) makes it the most expensive engine in this guide to keep healthy long-term. The updated N63TU and current S68 in the newest X7 and XM address some of these issues, but a used N63-equipped BMW needs a documented maintenance history before purchase, not just a clean-sounding test drive.

Electric Powertrains (i4, i5, i7, iX)

BMW’s battery-electric models sidestep the timing chain, cooling, and direct-injection issues that dominate this guide entirely — there’s no engine oil, no valve cover, no turbo. The trade-off is a different maintenance profile: brake and coolant systems are simpler, but 12-volt AGM battery health, high-voltage battery conditioning, and software-related electronics faults become the new watchpoints. Long-term repair-cost data on these models is still thin compared to BMW’s decades of gasoline-engine history.

Recommended Maintenance Schedule

BMW does not use a fixed mileage schedule the way most mainstream brands do. Its Condition Based Service (CBS) system tracks an oil-quality sensor, component wear, and driving style, then tells the car when service is actually due — so treat the milestones below as typical real-world intervals, not a fixed rulebook. Note: CBS intervals shift based on driving style, climate, and fuel quality, so the same model can hit these milestones at different mileages for different owners.
