The first-generation CVT (2007-2013, worst around 2011) is the single item most worth avoiding on an older Compass – overheating and internal failure are common enough that a full replacement, cited around $1,700, is a realistic outcome on a neglected example. Jeep’s move to a conventional 6-speed automatic for 2014 fixed this directly. On second-generation 4×4 Trailhawk models, the ZF-sourced 9-speed automatic has a well-documented pattern of hesitant or jerky shifts at low speed – rarely a safety issue, but worth test-driving specifically for before buying. The most commonly reported Compass problem across all model years is a Wireless Control Module (WCM) fault that causes a no-crank or no-start condition – the module locks up electronically and needs to be reset or replaced. 2018-model-year Compasses have a disproportionate number of owner reports involving battery drain and engines stalling without warning. Uconnect touchscreen glitches occur at roughly the same low rate as on other current Jeep models.
The Compass does not carry the Wrangler’s death-wobble risk or the Grand Cherokee’s air-suspension complexity – it runs a conventional MacPherson strut front end.
