Due to an error in the instrument panel software at vehicle startup, the instrument panel may fail to display vehicle speed, brake system, and tire pressure warning lights.Consequence An instrument panel display that does not show critical information can increase the risk of a crash or injury. Remedy Dealers will update the instrument panel software over-the-air (OTA) for non-PHEV vehicles, free of charge. Wheel detachment can result in a loss of vehicle control. Either condition increases the risk of a crash. Remedy Dealers will inspect and tighten the front brake caliper mounting bracket and hub bearing bolts, as necessary, free of charge. Current-generation RAV4s show minimal engine problems overall. On V6-equipped models (offered on some trims and model years) past 100,000 miles, valve cover gaskets and oil pan seals can begin to weep – not catastrophic, but worth factoring into ownership cost versus the four-cylinder.
The RAV4’s AWD system has a strong reliability record across most of its history, with one notable exception: 2019-2022 Hybrid and Prime models can develop high-voltage cable corrosion that affects the rear motor specifically. This is a targeted, model-specific issue, not a general AWD weakness.
3rd and early 4th-generation RAV4s (roughly 2006-2015) have a documented tendency to develop a clunk or bind in the intermediate steering shaft, typically felt at low speed or when the wheel is turned near full lock.
Recent-generation RAV4s have shown infotainment freezing and occasional transmission hesitation during acceleration, generally addressed through software updates – this is a comfort and convenience issue rather than a sign of a bigger mechanical problem.
