Outside the 2AZ-FE oil-consumption window described above, Camry engines have a strong long-term reliability record. Routine oil-change discipline matters more on the older four-cylinder than on the current generation’s engines.
The 8-speed automatic’s early software-related shift hesitation (2018-2019) is the main documented transmission issue on recent Camrys, and it’s a software fix, not a mechanical failure – confirm the relevant update has been applied on any car from those two model years.
Infotainment freezing or lag has been reported on recent-generation Camrys, generally resolved with a system reboot or dealer software update rather than a hardware replacement.

Is the Toyota Camry reliable?
Yes, on recent generations especially – the current and 2020-2022 generations have strong reliability records. The main exception is the 2AZ-FE four-cylinder engine era (roughly 2002-2009), which needs an oil-consumption check before buying.
What’s the best Camry year to buy?
2020-2022 models offer a strong combination of a mature, updated 8-speed automatic and refined infotainment. 2017-2018 pre-redesign models are also a safe, well-proven choice if you prefer the previous generation.
Should I avoid the 2018-2019 Camry?
Not necessarily, but confirm the transmission software update has been applied – Toyota resolved the early 8-speed shift-hesitation complaints through updates within a couple of production years.
