Oil Pan (Sump) Diagram

A sump is an oil reservoir (low space) bolted to the bottom of the engine. The oil from the oil pan moves to the engine`s parts for lubricating, cleaning, and cooling of moving parts and then it pools in the sump.

An oil pump is used to force supply the oil to moving engine parts. The oil under the pressure moves through an oil filter and circulates inside the engine.

What material is oil sump made of?

An oil pan is typically made of aluminum or steel. The volume of the oil pan can hold from three to six liters of oil.

Sump Diagram

There is the oil dipstick into the oil pan which helps to measure the oil level in the sump. Usually when replacing the motor oil it is required to drain the old oil, remove a drain plug to do this.

Oil Sump Leaks

Oil leaks sometimes have a place on the engine sump. The reason for the sump leaking can be the bad gaskets or seals, over-tightened drain plugs, or sump damages.

You must have common sense when a vehicle goes off-road and take care of the item to avoid any damage to the sump.
