As you may already know, the BMW 5, 6, and 7 Series commonly experience issues with rear axle silent blocks. Similar problems can also be found in the 1, 2, 3, and 4 Series. Let’s go over how to replace the silent blocks on these vehicles.
First, raise the car on a lift, and I’ll guide you through each step. You’ll see the differential mounted with three silent blocks.”
But cars with this kind of mileage often come in for repairs with issues like damaged silent blocks in the rear differential. It’s typically the rear silent block that fails. To access it, you’ll need to remove the counterweight. To replace the silent blocks, slightly lower the differential by loosening all the bolts.
“The rear silent block is replaced in the same way as on the F10, with one main difference: the F10 has an aluminum subframe, while this model has an iron one. The subframe consists of two parts, and when pressing out the silent block, there is a risk of it becoming distorted, which can make removal difficult.
To replace the silent blocks, remove the exhaust pipe, heat shields, and release the suspension. This will allow you to lower the reduction.
1. Raise a car on lift
2. Spray the subframe with anti-rust spray.
3. Unscrew the vibration dampers.
4. Lower the reduction.
5. Unscrew the two front bolts (18 mm).
6. Unscrew the rear bolt (21 mm).
7. Lower the rear axle and remove the rear bolts.
8. Detach the wires from the subframe on both the left and right sides to avoid tearing them.
9. Unscrew the two remaining bolts.
10. Support the reduction.
Remove the bolts. Now, inspect the silent block — the upper part is completely torn.”
“We lower and suspend the gearbox to avoid damaging the axle shafts.
- Unscrew the silent block bolts and press out the front silent blocks from front to back.
- Press out the front and rear silent blocks using a special puller, along with specific mandrels for pressing.
- When replacing a damaged silent block, it’s best to replace all three at once. Otherwise, if another fails, you’ll have to repeat the entire process.
Measure the distance the silent block protrudes from the subframe (7mm) to ensure accurate installation of the new one. If the silent block becomes warped or gets stuck, it may need to be cut out.

Clean the silent block seats.
Installation of the Rear Silent Block
- Position the mandrel and make alignment marks to correctly orient the silent block with the hole in a horizontal position.
- Mark the subframe so that when the mandrel is in place, you can align it accurately.
- Apply mounting oil, position the silent block so that its protrusion points towards the gearbox, and press it until it protrudes 7mm.
Installation of the Front Silent Blocks
- The silent blocks are pressed from back to front, with the cut facing the center of the car.
- Use a special tie and mandrel. Insert the bolts and lightly tighten them without fully torquing.
- Torque the front bolts to 100 N·m and the rear bolts to 165 N·m.
- Install the counterweight and tighten its bolt to 28 N·m.”
